Accommodations Related to COVID-19

Ohio State has welcomed faculty and staff back to campuses with new health and wellness protocols developed to help protect the entire Buckeye community. The university is committed to ensuring that individuals who are vulnerable to COVID-19 or who face particular challenges because of the pandemic can learn and work as safely as possible.

Student accommodations

Student Life Disability Services (SLDS), in conjunction with the Office of Institutional Equity, works with students who are vulnerable to COVID-19 or face particular challenges because of the pandemic to ensure that they have the necessary resources to participate in university life as safely as possible.

Ohio State students from any campus may submit a COVID-related accommodation request. Students registered with Student Life Disability Services can work directly with their assigned Access Specialist to modify their accommodations or make additional accommodation requests based on COVID-19. If an accommodation is required, the ADA coordinator’s office will facilitate an interactive process that includes SLDS, the instructor and the department/college.

SLDS updated its recommended syllabus statement to include the process for requesting accommodations related to COVID-19. Additional operational adjustments due to COVID-19, including exam accommodations, can be found on the SLDS website.

Faculty and staff accommodations

The Office of Human Resources works with employees who are most vulnerable to complications from COVID-19, or those who have a personal or health situation affected by COVID-19, and their supervisors to ensure that these individuals have the necessary resources to work as safely as possible. Through a COVID-19 accommodation request, which is a secure intake process, individuals are asked to:

  • Identify and attest that their health or other factor places them at greater risk of serious illness if they contract COVID-19.
  • Provide details about their work environment concerns.
  • Indicate what needs and resources they feel are necessary to perform their job safely.

The university supports maximum flexibility to help our faculty, staff and student employees balance the demands of work and home life during this COVID-19 pandemic. To minimize the spread of illness, the university expects that remote work options are supported in all cases for employees where remote work is feasible.
